CHAPTER 14

PULASKI COUNTY

THE MYSTERIOUS MOODY LIGHTS

For a long time, there have been legends about some mysterious lights that appear on old Moody Road, which is west of Francesville toward Rensselaer. You won’t find the road on Google Maps because the name has changed to Meridian Road. You have to go at night and park at the T of Meridian and Division Roads, which is south of where Indiana 49 ends. Then flash your lights three times. You should see a light scanning the field.

Several legends have developed over the years about what causes the strange lights. One legend has it that old man Moody’s youngest daughter took the horse and buggy to Francesville one night and never returned. He went out to look for her and found that she had lost control of the buggy and crashed into a tree. The light seen by many is supposed to be Mr. Moody with his lantern, looking for his lost daughter. Another legend has it that it was his son and not his daughter.

Another tale told by Abulia Productions in a video in 2013 has it that two brothers were returning from northwest Indiana when a thunderstorm arrived, scaring the horses. The older brother went for help while the younger brother stayed with the horses. When the brother returned, he discovered his brother had been killed and his head was decapitated and lying in a cornfield. The light is a lantern he is using to search for his brother’s murderer.
